2020.09.14 03:54 BehindMeNow2020 Married to a sicko!

Met a traveling man in 2002. Dated 2 years and married in 2004. Sex was always mechanical at best. I knew there were issues because he would frequently masturbate online and now I know he met some of those folks. For me to keep quiet, he is willing to lose everything he has worked for. Is he gay? Is he a pedo? Freak? What the what? What could make a man lose every single thing he has...HUGE $ ? I confronted him a year ago and he moved out. We have been separated for over a year and the divorce is moving forward this week. The delay was on his end. He still doesn't have an attorney! No children, thank goodness. In my heart something is telling me it is criminal on his end. Should I have his electronics and credit cards subpoenaed? Advice please. I stayed in this marriage because I was not strong enough to leave and was in complete denial. We are well known in the city we live in and have two businesses. I was afraid of failure. I cannot believe I wasted 18 years of my life! I'm gonna be fine but I am curious to see what others think. He travels Richmond, Va. Beach, Williamsburg, Roanoke, Martinsville, Danville, Va., BangoPortlandMaine, NC, Jacksonville, Florida, Philly and who knows where else. Just for the record, I am a highly educated business professional and so is he. This is not just some teenage kid talking. Just sayin'.

2020.08.27 10:59 adinfinitesimal [Thank You] u/travellincat and lovely anonymous person!

I have two awesome postcards here!
a) travellincat, thank you so much for the gorgeous vintage FL postcard--it's lovely, eerie, and somehow totally Florida simultaneously. Also, one of my best friends is from Roanoke, VA, so I extra appreciated that stamp. (Weird fact: the city known as Roanoke was known as Big Lick before 1884.)
PS Also duuuuuude congratulations!!
b) [name removed for privacy reasons]: I can't tag you, sadly, but thank you so much for the lovely vintage DC card! It's such a lovely view of the skyline. Also loved that they dated it--1965. Please comment if you sent this so I can thank you properly!

2020.07.29 18:45 contactclosure Old Tour Date archives

Hey everyone. I wanted to go back and find the dates of the shows I saw on the Lateralus tour, Lateralus part 2, 10k days, and 10k days part 2. I remember(ish) the cities I saw but I'm not finding an easy to use database for these old shows. Anyone have one of those magic links that solves all of my problems?
If it matters, Charlotte NC 2001, Greenvile SC 2001 or 02, Raleigh NC 2001, Roanoke or Richmond VA 2001 or 02 (Lateralus part 2 I think). Then for 10k days there was a Charlotte and Greenville but I can't remember which was on which tour cycle. Hence my need for some data haha.
Thanks!!!
ETA - Setlist.fm is what I was looking for. Killer site!

2020.07.18 17:02 Army_Bot Summary For: Weekly Question Thread (4/13 to 4/19)

Does anyone else consistently have problems gaming with other friends on Boingo (barracks) internet? Buddies and I constantly get disconnected mid-game on Xbox, seems like Boingo forces you to have a non-open NAT type. Yes I know getting married is the answer, commitment terrifies me, chocolate shake and a medium fry please.

I don't know if this is the place or if I can say since I just enlisted and haven't gone to basic yet. But the Army issued an official notice that they are holding all new recruits and basic training for a minimum of 2 weeks. this was posted at the beginning of April. I also hear alot of people not having ship dates anymore and being postponed indefinitely. Yet, I do have a ship date of April 20th. Idk why but it just seems weird to me. I'm not in a in demand job (in my opinion), im an 11B, although i do have an option40 contract with RASP and airborne. Also my recruiter hasnt given me any detailed info about when i leave, how i leave, what to bring, that kind of stuff. So i dont mind leaving next week, I just dont like the not knowing if this is a definite plan or not. So any insight from anyone on whether you think ill ship or not?
P.S. i had an initial ship date of March 23rd, then it was pushed to May 4th, then it was pulled back to April 20th

Showing up at my first unit soon and am very nervous. I'm a 68W headed to a Cav unit in the 101st. If anyone can give me any insight on what to do/expect when I show up, I'd greatly appreciate it. I heard units often "assess" you when you get there and then decide where to put you accordingly. Is this true? It's fine by me; I'm just curious is all. Also, should I show up with my name and rank sewed on? Thank you!

I got an Airborne Slot at AIT but corona rolled in right when we were about to take our PT test for it, so that’s been canceled for a while. I’ve got the airborne physical done for it and my orders did change to Fort Bragg. Can our cadre still send us to benning? Or is the APFT a prerequisite to go to airborne school.

Does anyone know the criteria used to determine which recruits received active duty status (i.e. paycheck and benefits) with their delayed ship date?
I was informed that only recruits in dire circumstances would qualify -- I was told to quit my job and cancel my lease but was somehow still denied (i.e. I will have no source of income while waiting to ship).
To make matters worse, I'm not even eligible for unemployment since I quit my job and my previous employer's health insurance ends at the end of the month so god helps me if I get sick.
I've already spoken to my recruiter. They had the same amount of knowledge and frustration that I did.

If I want the best chances of deploying in reserves which job should I pick between 35L and 38B? I am choosing between these two jobs and want the best chances of being deployed. More than once would be ideal. I know it varies widely but if one has a better chance I would lean towards that.

Is it possible to switch for Split op to normal OSUT while awaiting shipping? High school senior who enlisted ( 11b) in the ANG. I choose the split op so I didn’t have to miss first semester in college (BCT this summer AIT next summer) but due to COVID 19 my training date might get moved back. I was wondering if I had the option to switch from split op to OSUT since if I leave in July or August instead then I would already be missing my first semester.

just to be sure...anyone can take the DLPT and it's not something limited to 35P's right? and it's also the test that determines your FLPB? how much of a difference in pay can you expect from a language in payment category B vs category A? also I've heard that you might not get paid at all if it's not useful for your mission? do you have to be deployed in the country your language is based on to get the FLPB? (korean and japanese are the langs I'm looking at btw... not fluent in either but can probably work towards 2/2 with studying)

I know I can use my GI bill for 4? years, and I can use TA each year assuming I dont flag myself, and I dont fail any classes, but is it an option to become a Army Doc to help pay for my school or to commision while trying to get my degree? I want to either be pediatrician or a radiologist. Ill talk to a recruiter when I can but Im currently stuck on a deployment waiting to come home weighing my options with this stop move.

Hello all, I’m a navy reject, made it to 6-2, got sepped for a bs med reason related to sleep apnea, which they never tested for or verified, came home a little while ago, and got in touch with an army recruiter I had spoken with prior to deciding which branch. I’m kinda nervous and have heard a lot of mixed things about joining, some say it’s great, others say it’s awful, I was wondering what it’s like going through basic and being deployed for the average guy, I’m sure mos plays a role in that as well, I’m hoping to go 25 series, if that affects anything. As a side note I really want to serve and am looking for opportunities to do humanitarian aid and gain practical skills, any help, advice, or stories/ personal experience is much appreciated!

What is the waiver process like at meps? Basically I talked to a recruiter since I re-3e admin sepped for depression at Navy RTC. Now I'm in the process of getting a psych eval, and letters of reference from past employers, school etc. Does the waiver process happen at meps? Of course, I know I have the odds stacked against me, and the recruiter said I have a 20 percent chance of making it through, but I still wish to apply. What should I expect as to what they are looking for?

I'm enlisting in the military in a few weeks. Problem is, I don't know what branch. The only info I have is what the recruiters give me, and their job is to sell me, which means their info is biased. I'm trying to decide between the Marine Corps, Army, Navy, Coast Guard, or Air Force.
I was hoping y'all could give advice that would help my decision. How is the enlisting process, boot camp, life in your branch, etc? Any regrets you may have or any other information you can give is invaluable.
A little about me: I like to relax but am active at the same time. I enjoy talking with family and friends and working. I like to do things that serve a higher purpose than me. I haven’t been a historical fitness buff, which is why I’m questioning myself. I am planning on doing cyber intelligence in whatever branch I choose. I prefer that type of work, intelligence, than other options. If you have more questions, please let me know.
Thank y'all in advance.

Currently in the Enlistment process. I just had a single question to ask.
Two and a Half years ago My mother brought me to her doctor to see if i had ADHD. I had a 10 minute session and he Diagnosed me with ADHD and some strange depression disorder then proceeded to assign me some medication. I took it one week then never took it again due to the medication made me have very very violent thoughts. A month later i went back and explained the situation, he upped the dosage. I never took that medication and never went back.
I know that having ADHD is a problem for joining and i dont even think i have it. What should i do?

army,
I'm currently in the reserves as a 38B (Civil Affairs), enjoying it but becoming a pilot has really peaked my interest because of this job I have 4 years left on my contract with the reserves. Would I be able to drop a Warrant Officer Flight Candidate packet at any time?
When I was originally joining the army, I wanted to class as a 09W but at meps, I came back with a partial color blind (MILD) and my recruiter was insistent that I would not be selected for any sort of flight due to that an waivers. I settled but have not given up. Civil Affairs treats me well.
My question is, am I able to try for a slot in the future? If so how does that work during my contract? Would my color sight be deter mental to it? It was only the color circle plate test that really messed me up. I can distinguish very well.

Army broke my contract?
So I was in the process of re-enlissting, had my contract signed and given a ship date of April 6th. The contract was a four year, 18x(SF recruit) contract. On April 4th(2 days prior to ship date), I was informed from my recruiter that ARSOF denied my contract. The memo letter said that I "did not meet medical fitness standards" which is absurd because I'm in great physcial shape and I had to be clear on everything in Medical at M.E.P.S. before I was even allowed to sign a contract, just like all the other potential recruits. Is this legal? Or is there anything I can do to fight this? I know once you're in the D.E.P. that is technically a legal binding contract. My recruiter essentialy refuses to help me, getting no answer from him at all. I was given two days to decide to re-negotiate or terminate my contract. If I refused to re-negotiate, it would be seen as me "quiting the Army" <--From my recruiter. I've searched the boards here and haven't found anythng related to this, so I'm at a loss. The things that really upsets me is the fact it was two days prior to my ship date, I had put in my two weeks at work and had all my living arrangements made for obvious reasons, and I'm told there is nothing I can do unless I go in as a different M.O.S..

I was nasty girl so I don't know about different active things.
In the active army is there on base housing where you live in a big bay with 50 people? Or is the worst situation 2 man rooms?

So is MEPS still open with corona and all? My recruiter was saying in Illinois they're supposed to be opening up in May assuming stay at home doesnt get extended again (sounds like it is) but he was like "well if they're closed in Illinois we'll just take a road trip to Michigan or Indiana or wherever they're open" which sounded kinda odd since Michigan's lockdown is supposedly one of the strictest rn

I’m shipping under 14H (peoples opinions on ADA in this sub got me worried) in the next couple months and have been struggling to find more detailed descriptions on what the job entails.
For instance, when I graduate AIT will I most likely go directly to a patriot battalion or is there a chance to go to THAAD or different units.
Secondly, my recruiter who was also a 14H strongly recommended trying to go JTAGS after AIT, which he was a part of. Is this possible coming straight out of AIT or does it require more time in to go to JTAG.
Also I am wondering how easily I can “control my destiny” by working hard and graduating top of AIT class. Would this allow me to go to better locations/get in better schools? Finally if you have any day to day information on the job/advice I’d appreciate it. Thankyou in advance.

Hi there, new 68W, got my basic and therefore my AIT delayed due to everything that's been going on. Long story short I noted on my enlistment packet that I was originally being assigned to a line unit and I'm desperately hoping to still be assigned to a line unit and not the hospital. Main question is: Will the shipment delay affect my unit assignment?

Is anyone here a 71B? I'd really like to know what the day to day of that position is like because a lot of the information I find isn't really that helpful. I am currently a reservist 35P, so I know about enlisted army life but nothing about commissioned life, especially in the medical corps. I am getting a chemical engineering degree right now and have the option to have a focus in biochemistry and an wondering if I should do it or not.

I'm probably gonna sound like a dumbfuck cherry, but I have to ask, how feasible is it to take college classes if i choose infantry? My current contract is 25S, and the little I can find about it online describes the washout rate as decently high, and the MOS is exceedingly technical and boring as fuck. I know infantry mostly do area beautification and get yelled at, but realistically can college courses be taken? How often do you go out to the field and for how long? I chose 25S for the signing bonus (I have a bit over 20k debt in student loans that defaulted), but my real desire is to do something actually fun and challenging (I'm not a dumb adventurist, I realize infantry kill people and its hard as balls, but I both want the challenge and comradery). The Signing bonus is negligible in comparison to 3-4 years of my life wasted in front of a screen. A few added questions below;
  1. Is 2 classes for an online accounting degree realistic for a per semester basis? It's technically 4 per 'normal' semester since each semester at UMGC (online regionally accredited university; they're accredited by umd so it's legit) is 8 weeks. Is that pushing it? Not trying to come off arrogant but I'm a fast learner and a smart guy, so essentially 2 classes every 8 weeks seems feasible. I don't party or drink so my free time could be split with classes if need be.
  2. Am I being a dumb adventurist for wanting to go infantry? I don't think i'm a high speed guy, but I'm just trying to ride out 3 years for the gi bill and some college credits. That being said I 100% understand the risks of a war happening tomorrow or during my IRR and getting called up to fight. That doesn't bother me as of right now, but I can't answer for 5 years from now.
  3. Are airborne contracts being offered right now? Are infantry and airborne bonuses being paid out? I realize if i drop my temporary reservation at meps I'll lose the bonus, but I really dislike the MOS from everything I've read, and I want to get out of my shell instead of being stuck with nerds inside a windowless jail essentially.

2020.02.18 05:38 EnemyAsmodeus Virginia Senate Assault Firearm Ban defeated for 1 year--REMEMBER THIS & CALL TO THANK

I posted this call-to-action Friday. People did call and write emails and send letters.
The NRA itself wrote a post about 2A activists writing and calling their State Senators (even Democratic State Senators). Senate Judiciary defeated the bill: 10-5.
You MVPs DEFEATED this bill for a YEAR. This is no small victory and don't listen to those who say Democracy and pressure on politicians doesn't work.
I'm not associated with NRA or VCDL, I just worked hard myself. I told the Firearms official discord about it: http://discord.gg/xBxcHjA
But just remember, that real gun activists can make a difference in politics. Found this link for VCDL: https://www.vcdl.org/event-3752965?CalendarViewType=1&SelectedDate=2/17/2020
------------
If you can call to thank the following Virginia State Senators. PLEASE THANK THEM & HELP THEIR CAMPAIGN (Bloomberg will target them, if Bloomberg starts losing Democrats it's over for gun control):
------------
Good Democrats:

2020.02.09 22:49 thatfatbastard I made a yeast starter. Again.

EDIT: Frankenyeast is live: https://old.reddit.com/Homebrewing/comments/f59x4e/frankenyeast_iv_a_new_hope/?
Some of you old timers know me, I run an LHBS in Roanoke, VA. For the rest of you, "Howdy!"
One of the joys of running a homebrew store is the amount of liquid yeast that goes out of date. I wrote a whole thing about that 3 years ago. So, what to do? Brew up 5 gallons of wort and make a giant yeast starter!
This is the fourth installment of our giant yeast starters that we call Frankenyeast. We're going back to basics with this one and once again using "clean" American, European, and one Australian yeast strain. Welcome to Frankenyeast IV: A New Hope
My process:
  1. Gather your 62 out of date yeast packs and sanitize them.
  2. Make a giant starter. This is 5 gallons of wort made up of one 3.3 lb jar of Briess Golden Light LME and two 1 lb bags of Briess Pilsen DME coming in at 1.044. Oh, and some Wyeast Beer Nutrient. Boil all this stuff for 20 minutes, adding the nutrient and a whirlfloc tablet at 10 minutes. I did not take pictures of this step. I assume that y'all have boiled wort before.
  3. Chill that sucker down and transfer to a carboy. I happened to use a 6 gallon PET carboy for this. That may have been a mistake. By the time I finished adding 62 packs of yeast to the carboy we were approaching the 6 gallon mark. Durn, guess I'll use a 7 gallon Fermonster next time.
  4. Best put a blow off on that sucker! My blow off setup is a little convoluted, and you probably don't need to do this, but I worry about it getting knocked over since, you know, this is a store and we get lots of people in here.
Now we wait. I literally just finished doing all of those steps above. I'm hoping that the starter will be finished by next Sunday as our local homebrew club is having their monthly meeting in our classroom then.
I used to package our Frankenyeasts in the old White Labs vials. Now, White Labs is really only using the vials for the funky stuff, so that's a no go. I picked up some sterile 50mL centrifuge tubes for use now and some local folks may get theirs bottled.
As I mentioned, this is our fourth Frankenyeast. Want to read about Frankenyeast 1 through 3? Take a look:
Frankenyeast I. Like IV, the first installment was all "clean" yeasts. We wound up shipping Frankenyeast all over the country. Some customers were kind enough to send us pictures of their fermentations, along with their notes.
Frankenyeast I was written up by Brulosophy here and here, and Brewunited here.
Frankenyeast II: The Belgae. This one was all wheat and Belgian strains. I made a nice little single with it, and once again we shipped it all over. I'm not a huge fan of Belgian beers (I know, I know) but I was really impressed with the beers folks made with this strain.
Frankenyeast III: Frankenlager. I wasn't such a fan of this one. After this I decided not to make another Frankenlager blend.
Some preemptive Q&As:
What's it going to taste like? I dunno. Might be awesome, might be craptacular.
Can I get some? Most likely yes, if you really want it. We'll give it out for free at our store once it's ready. If you don't live locally, don't give up. I'll make another post once it is ready with a link to it on our store. The yeast itself will be free, but ice packs and the USPS don't grow on trees, fella.
What sort of beer should I make with it? That's your call. I made an awesome Robust Porter with the first one, and I know that several IPAs and a particularly good Maris Otter and Cascade SMaSH were made with it, too.
Feel free to ask any other questions below!
Oh, and drewbage1847 - man, it took me awhile, but I finally got around to making another batch.

Redditors will reach out to you via direct message or reddit messenger to request signs.
[Distributing Signs Beyond S4P]
It may be the case that there aren't a lot of requests by S4P members for signs in a particular area. In such situations, it's important to find a home for your extra Bernie signs so that they can be put to good use. Here are some good ideas
As you give away signs, be sure to check in with Infinite_Derp to let him know what the situation is and your updated sign counts.
Note: Volunteers currently outpace sign donors. Please consider ordering signs for one of our volunteers to help spread the Bern around this great nation!

2020.01.30 08:44 Carmine100 Question regarding voc rehab with gi bill rate

I have a question, so I got a letter from my VRE office in Roanoke VA telling me what my monthly rate would be(I have gi bill time left) and just now I got paid but what i got was not according to the paper I was sent. The paper tells me my rate is 1,914.00 but I was paid 1339.80? My start date is according to this paper 1-06-2020 to 1/26-2020. We got back from break on the 6th of January. Wait a min, did I get a pro rated rate again because of break. I got a pro rated month for December because of break and I was not aware of this until someone from the school told me? Did this same thing happen again

one more thing, the rate on the website for the GI bill rate for me is 1,773 but the paper tells me 1,914.00, did they do something wrong or did a COLA adjustment kick in?

thanks all :D

here is my school: https://www.va.gov/gi-bill-comparison-tool/profile/21014246

2020.01.13 23:46 TexasNiteowl Identifying the family of my 2xgreat-grandfather - input please

Note: I tried to format this so it would display nicely, but reddit is failing me. Sorry!
I've been working under an assumption for a while that I have found the "parents" of my 2xgreat-grandfather. However, there is no vital record, etc. to prove it. I'm going to place a lot of information below...including my sources which includes a transcription of his obituary. But I'm going to place my questions/issues here at the top.
Joseph L. Sparks
Place of birth: His obituary, death certificate, and marriage record all say "Madison County, Virginia."
Date of birth: His gravestone says 20 May 1845; his death certificate says 20 May 1846. Census records are scattered:
Parents: His death certificate names "Buckner" Sparks as his father. His obituary names: "Buckner and Nancy" Sparks. In all my searching so far, I have never found a family with these names. Presumably "Buckner" at least could be a nickname.
My searches have primarily relied on census records. I searched the 1850 and 1860 records for all "Sparks" in Madison County, Virginia (and on ancestry, used the option for adjacent counties). I found only one Sparks family with a son Joseph born in the 1840s. This is the family of William J. and Sarah W. Sparks. In the 1850 census there is a Joseph L. Sparks in the house, age 5. In the 1860 census, the same family has Joseph Sparks listed as age 12.
I also found, in the book "A History of Madison County, Virginia" (by Claude Yowell), that W.J. Sparks and Joseph L. Sparks are listed together in the list of members of Captain George Booton Company "Reserves," Richmond, Va. (This is an Appendix of Civil War Veterans.) Circumstantial, but interesting.
Finally, one line in the obituary says an aged brother is still residing in Virginia. I've traced 2 of the 3 brothers according to the census. 1 died before him. (John W.) 1 died after him. (Oliver J.) The final one I am still trying to trace. (James)
So I guess I'm wondering...where else would you look for now? If I can find the correct civil war records for my Joseph Sparks, would they list his fatheguardian if he really was very young (too young?) to join?
I plan to try to visit my FHC in the near future to view some of the records from Madison County. Ideally I'd find a will/probate records for William J. Sparks that mentions Joseph. Or land records transferring land between the heirs on the death of William. Any other suggestions?

Now the obituary:
Joseph L. SPARKS, a resident of Stafford Township for about thirty-five years, died at 8:30 p.m. Thursday, December 2, 1926, at the home of his son, Charles SPARKS, at Lyons following a stroke of apoplexy. Since the death of his wife several years ago he had made his home with his children. Following is the obituary as read at the funeral of the deceased.
Joseph L. SPARKS, son of Buckner and Nancy SPARKS, was born in Madison, Va., and departed this life December 2, 1926, at the age of eighty years, six months and twelve days.
At the age of sixteen, at the beginning of the Civil War he enlisted in the army and as so many did from that state, he chose to follow the flag of the Confederacy.
In January of 1874, he was united in marriage with Matilda SELVEY, of Simpson, West Virginia. To this union were born twelve children. The mother and three children having preceded him to the Great Beyond. Nine children are living to mourn their loss. The are Mrs. Della ADAMSON and Mrs. Lizzie ADAMS, of Sanborn; James SPARKS, of Edwardsport; Floyd SPARKS of Roanoke, Va., Mrs. Mae FLYNN, of Palestine, Ill., and Samuel SPARKS, Welker SPARKS, John SPARKS and Charles SPARKS, of Lyons. He is also survived by an aged brother residing in Virginia, and a host of relatives and friends to mourn their loss.
In 1875 they migrated to Indiana, settling in Delaware County, later coming to Greene County, where he spent the rest of his days. The last three years he had been in very poor health.
In 1893 he united with the Methodist church at Marco under the pastorate of Rev WELKER, before and since, having been a firm believer in the right as he was able to see it.”
The funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, December 5, at the M. E. Church at Marco, conducted by the Rev. W. E. WATKINS, pastor of the M. E. church of Lyons. Interment in the Marco Cemetery.

2020.01.04 19:58 ZappaOMatic [OC] The inaugural NASCAR Strictly Stock race: Where are they now?

TL;DR: Mostly but (probably?) not completely dead
On June 19, 1949, the NASCAR Strictly Stock Division took to the dirt of Charlotte Speedway for a 200-lap showdown. Little did those in attendance know that this was the start of something special: the birth of the NASCAR Cup Series.
But what happened to the 33 drivers in the field for that race? What are they up to? Let's find out!
This isn't going to be a comprehensive bio of the drivers, but rather just a brief mention of what they did before the inaugural race, how/why they entered, and what happened since (and if they are alive or not). Amusingly, this post came too dangerously close to the character limit before I could even finish the top 20, so I had to split the rest of the field as a comment below.
1. Jim Roper
The first-ever winner, Jim Roper took the victory in rather controversial circumstances as original race winner Glenn Dunaway was disqualified; Roper, who finished second and three laps down, was declared the winner.[1]
The Great Bend, Kansas native found out about the race while reading a comic strip from Zack Moseley's The Adventures of Smilin' Jack. Interested, he acquired a 1949 Lincoln Cosmopolitan from local dealer Millard James Clothier Sr. and supported by Charlotte dealership Mecklenburg Motors.[2][3]
He would run just one more NASCAR Strictly Stock/Cup race in his career, a fifteenth-place run later in 1949 at Occoneechee Speedway.
Roper later returned to Kansas, where he continued racing in IMCA-sanctioned events and jalopies. A serious injury in a 1955 crash ended his racing career (outside of a one-off at the Kansas State Fairgrounds in 1961). He eventually settled in Texas and raised horses.[2]
He died on June 23, 2000 at a retirement home. He had been battling cancer and heart/liver complications in his final years.[2][3] His gravestone at Halstead Cemetery mentions his Charlotte win (though in this 2009 photo, it states Charlotte Motor Speedway, which is not the same track).
2. Fonty Flock
Runner-up to Roper, Fonty Flock drove a 1949 Hudson in the race.
In 1949, Fonty Flock won the NASCAR Modified championship. Entering the Strictly Stock inaugural race, he was dominating the standings with over 300 points on second-placed Curtis Turner.[4] Just two years before, he was named the first NASCAR (then the National Championship Stock Car Circuit) champion.[5]
Flock ran the inaugural race with his brothers Tim and Bob, and the three were also joined by their sister Ethel Mobley the following round at Daytona Beach. The Flock family was NASCAR's premier family during the 1950s, with Fonty famously winning the 1952 Southern 500 in Bermuda shorts and eventually leading the fans in singing "Dixie" while standing on his car's hood.[6]
He would win 19 races in his Grand National career before retiring in 1958.
Flock died on July 15, 1972 after a bout with cancer.[5]
3. Red Byron
I don't think Red Byron needs any introduction. A World War II B-24 Liberator tail-gunner who raced with a left leg brace bolted to the clutch pedal, Modified champion, inaugural Strictly Stock/Cup champion, Hall of Famer, the list goes on.
After finishing third at Charlotte, he won the next race at Daytona Beach and ended his 1949 season with two wins and the title. He continued racing until health problems ended his career 1951, but remained involved in racing in the sports car world.[7]
He was preparing plans to start a sports car team when he suffered a fatal heart attack in his Chicago hotel room on November 11, 1960.[7] He is buried at Pinecrest Cemetery in Lake Worth, Florida, where his tombstone mentions his military service.
"Ironically, the man who had brought millions of hearts to the verge of failure in fans around the world, was sent through the rail for the last time by failure of his own heart," The Anniston Star's George Smith wrote a week after his passing.[8]
"The man who chose country over racing, and then racing over pain," ESPN's Ryan McGee wrote in his 2012 Veterans Day tribute to Byron. "American race fans continue to benefit from both."[7]
4. Sam Rice
J. Sam Rice ran just one more Strictly Stock race in his career: another fourth-place finish at Heidelberg Raceway.
That said, Rice was more well-known for his exploits outside of the cockpit. In 1947, Rice and his friend H. Clay Earles built Martinsville Speedway, with Rice serving as the first track president.[9] Rice also owned cars for a decade, fielding rides in the 1950s for those like Fireball Roberts and Bill Blair.[10]
Although Racing-Reference has a driver and owner page for Rice, they have different death dates thanks to some confusion in the comments on the former: the driver bio says he died on July 9, 1976, while the owner one says February 19, 2010 thanks to the wording of a News & Record article from that same date. Since he was born in 1904, he would have been 106 if he died in 2010 (while centenarians aren't that rare, one being such a prominent figure in NASCAR should have spawned at least some discussion), plus Find A Grave supports his death at the age of 72 in 1976.
5. Tim Flock
Fonty's younger brother, Tim Flock drove an Oldsmobile 88 that he borrowed from his recently-married neighbors in the race. He recalled in 1997:[11]
"They had thousands of people show up just to watch practice! That traffic was so bad and everybody was in it. You'd have race cars next to family cars, all jammed up, and the only reason you knew the difference between the racers and the regular people was that the racers had a number taped on their door. Like, a number made out of duct tape."
After his top five at Charlotte, he would enjoy a prolific career in the Grand National Series as he won 39 races and two series championships in 1952 and 1955. Of course, many also know him as the driver who had the monkey Jocko Flocko riding with him.
One of his race victories came at Road America in 1956. The race, which received the seal of approval from the FIA, drew plenty of attention as many wondered how stock cars would handle the road course; Lee Petty even remarked, "the way I figure it, this race will be won by the driver who can go the fastest the slowest."[12]
The reigning champion Flock tailed pole winner and points leader Buck Baker for much of the early stages, but as the race leaders began exiting with various issues (Baker ran out of fuel, Curtis Turner hit the hay bales after losing his brakes, Joe Weatherly suffered a rear end issue, and Speedy Thompson's engine failed), Flock found himself in front. He led the final ten laps to win what is currently the first and only Cup race at Road America.[12]
He continued to race until 1961. That year, he and Curtis Turner attempted to form a driver's union with the support of the Teamsters and Jimmy Hoffa, leading to their lifetime ban. While they were eventually reinstated, Flock was more than happy to continue his new life working at Charlotte Motor Speedway.[13]
Flock, a future NASCAR Hall of Famer, was diagnosed with throat cancer in February 1998. He died on March 31.[14] He is buried at Sunset Memory Gardens in Mint Hill, North Carolina.
6. Archie Smith
Archie Smith of Denton was a relatively new face in the field at Charlotte in 1949.[15] Still in his teens at the time, he received word of the race when he overheard a commercial on the radio.[16]
In a 2002 article by David Poole of The Charlotte Observer, Smith recalled:[16] "It cost $25 to enter. Nobody had that. I was working for 75 cents an hour and my daddy didn't want me to go. But he finally agreed to loan me the money.
"It was my personal car. We taped the headlights up and taped a number on the side. [...] We had to buckle the doors closed and we had to have a seat belt. I bought an old horse harness at the hardware for a seat belt and used a regular old leather belt around the doors so they wouldn't fly open."
Speaking of daddy, his father Frank Smith was also part of the starting lineup. Even before the race, the father and son duo were quick to try a different tactic from everyone else: the two went to the local airport and filled their cars with airplane fuel. When they were caught, they brushed the gas off as for the race.[16]
Shortly prior to the green flag, Smith's car failed to start, forcing him to call his friend on pit road to blow out the gas line before he could get going. He finished the race sixth; had he won, Smith remarked, "I probably would have stayed in [NASCAR]. I was as good as any of them, I thought."[16]
Smith ran just one more NASCAR race in his career, finishing tenth at that year's Martinsville event. He noted he didn't wear a helmet.[16]
Although he never stuck around in NASCAR, he continued racing in drag racing with General Motors and at Bowman Gray Stadium.[16]
He was the last living driver from the inaugural race, and is presumably still alive. An interview with him from 2012 can be watched here.
edit: Scratch that, he passed away last December
7. Sterling Long
Sterling Long ran three Strictly Stock/Grand National races, two in 1949 and one in 1950: after his seventh at Charlotte, he finished 28th and 26th at Occoneechee Speedway. The Charlotte Observer's August 9, 1950 issue had the following to say about his entry in that year's race:[17]
Sterling Long, Greensboro resident and formerly of Charlotte, today filed his entry for the 100-mile Grand National Circuit racae for late model automobiles slated for the fast Occoneechee one mile speedway Sunday afternoon.
Long will be driving a 1950 Hudson, the first Hudson entered for the speed classic being directed by Bill France under NASCAR sanction.
France anticipates a field of some 30 to 40 drivers for the big race, classed as Eastern North Carolina's biggest race of the season and one that may not be duplicated for years to come in the face of the present war crisis.
In his write-up on Racers Reunion, Tim Leeming wrote of Long's 26th-place run: "During the race, Sterling Long wrecked his Hudson in a spectacular series of flips but climbed from the destroyed car unhurt."[18]
According to Racing-Reference, he died on November 28, 1987, which would align with this Find A Grave memorial which adds he s buried in Soles Cemetery in Tabor City.
8. Slick Smith
How slick is Ebenezer "Slick" Smith? Slick enough to race in the Grand National Series for seven years, including much of the 1953 schedule, with 18 career top tens and a best finish of fourth at North Wilkesboro in 1954. A good number of his starts in both Grand National and Modifieds came in cars owned by fellow driver Frank Christian, usually running as teammates to Frank and his wife/fellow inaugural racer Sara.[19]
He also won a pole at Raleigh in 1953, prompting The Gaston Gazette's NASCAR This Week page to give him a shout-out in their 2006 season preview:[20]
Ever heard of Danny Weinberg? How about Slick Smith? Pat Kirkwood? All are among the 201 drivers who have won at least one pole in the history of NASCAR's premier series.
In 1950, Smith ran the North Wilkesboro race in a Nash Ambassador that was used by Bill France and Curtis Turner in the 1947 Carrera Panamericana. Nash, which eventually became part of American Motors Corporation after its parent Nash-Kelvinator merged with Hudson, was the first manufacturer to provide factory support in NASCAR.[21]
Racing-Reference says Smith died on January 27, 1997.
9. Curtis Turner
Like Byron, Curtis Turner probably doesn't need much of an introduction. A driver with a colorful and infamous reputation (most famously his then-lifetime ban in the 1961 for his efforts in forming a driver's union alongside Tim Flock), he missed out on the NASCAR title in 1949 but was voted Most Popular Driver and Most Outstanding Modified Driver.[22]
It's quite fitting that Turner finished next to Slick Smith; besides Smith driving Turner and France's Nash Ambassador at North Wilkesboro in 1950, Turner was responsible for Nash's lone NASCAR victory in 1951 at Charlotte.[21]
The 2016 NASCAR Hall of Fame inductee and golfer Clarence King were killed in a plane crash on October 4, 1970 in Pennsylvania; he was 46. Earlier, he had been participating in an exhibition race at Rockingham and was preparing for a special one-off return in the following week's National 500 at Charlotte.[23] Turner is buried at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Roanoke, Virginia.
10. Jimmy Thompson
Even before the inaugural Strictly Stock race, Jimmy Thompson was on NASCAR's shit list. During the sanctioning body's early years, Bill France cracked down on various drivers like Thompson, Marshall Teague, Speedy Thompson, Ed Samples, and Buddy Shuman for various reasons; Teague, who was NASCAR's first treasurer in 1947, was banned after he and France got into arguments over changing the prize money from a flat amount to 40 percent of the gate receipts. Thompson drew France's wrath when he and Teague bailed on NASCAR events to compete in other series, while the other drivers (who also ran different series) all received suspensions when they were caught placing thumbtacks on the track before a Modified event.[10]
France's official reason for their blacklisting? "Conduct detrimental to the best interests of the National Association of Stock Car Racing." Sounds familiar, doesn't it?[10]
However, just days before the Strictly Stocks made their debut, the suspended drivers pleaded their cases to NASCAR commissioner Cannonball Baker and were reinstated. While the other drivers received fines and were placed on probation, Thompson was fully exonerated of any wrongdoing and allowed to race in NASCAR without any sanctions. Although the other four were allowed to race in the Strictly Stocks once they paid their fines, only Thompson would enter the race.[24]
After finishing tenth in at Charlotte, he would go on to race in the Grand National Series until 1962, recording ten top tens and two top fives in 47 career races. One of his starts came in the first Daytona 500; considering the size of the new Daytona International Speedway, Thompson reportedly remarked: "There have been tracks that separated the men from the boys. But this is the track that will separate the weak from the strong long after the boys have gone home!"[25]
Just two years after ending his career, Thompson died of a heart attack in his North Carolina home on September 26, 1964.[25] His grave in Lakeland Memorial Park mentions his naval service during World War II.
11. Buck Baker
The 1956 and 1957 Grand National champion, Charlotte bus driver Buck Baker was one of the era's greatest drivers. A 46-time race winner, he was inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2013.
In 1949, Baker was chasing the Modified title, but entering the Strictly Stock race, he was quite a distance from points leader Fonty Flock. While Flock led with 1,187, Baker had fallen to seventh with 447.5 after losing sixth to Frank Mundy at Martinsville.[4] He also ran for the National Stock Car Championship, where he finished fourth in points behind Ed Samples, Curtis Turner, and Jack Smith.[26]
Four years after the Charlotte race, Baker and some others leased the legendary Air Base Speedway, whose lone Grand National race was won by inaugural Strictly Stock pole sitter Bob Flock.[27]
Baker died on April 16, 2002 at Carolinas Medical Center while having a procedure done for his pacemaker; he was 83.[28] His gravestone at Magnolia Memorial Gardens keeps it simple: A True Champion.
"Throughout the entire racing world, I don't know of anybody who would said he didn't give 110 percent from the time they dropped the green flag until the time the race was over," son Buddy Baker said. "He was that same way in life, too."[28]
12. Bill Blair
Like many of his fellow drivers, Bill Blair got his start as a moonshine runner in the 1930s. In 1939, he began racing at the newly-constructed High Point Speedway, and he opened his own track Tri-City Speedway after World War II.[29][30]
A friend of Bill France, Blair drove the other Lincoln Cosmopolitan from Millard Clothier at Charlotte. He dominated much of the race as he led 145 laps, but fell out of contention when one of his pit crew members removed the radiator cap, while efforts to solve the issue with cold water led to the thermostat housing cracking. He finished 12th.[3]
Blair enjoyed a fairly successful career in the Grand National Series during the 1950s as he won three races, including a 1953 victory at Daytona Beach.
He died on November 2, 1995.
13. Jack Smith
A decade after running the first Strictly Stock race, Jack Smith won the Grand National Most Popular Driver Award; although he tied Junior Johnson in the voting, a second ballot allowed him to edge Johnson out.[31]
Smith, who began racing in 1947 after building his own car, would enjoy a successful career in NASCAR's top level. From 1949 to his final season 1964, he won 21 races and finishes in the top five in points three times. The Georgia native also had a bit of an odd relationship with Darlington Raceway, where his car flipped out of the track and into the parking lot in 1954, "set the new speed record for driving sideways" in 1956, and once again flew out of the speedway in 1958.[32]
In 1960, he formed a close partnership with Bud Moore, and the two became the first duo to communicate via two-way radio.[32]
Son Jackie said the following about his father: "Daddy raced in the rough and tough days. He was a man's man. He drove hard. He had broad shoulders, big arms. They raced and they fought back then."[33]
"Jack was a hell of a competitor," Moore added. "Jack was a good race driver back in his day. In his time, he was about as good as any of them that come along."[33]
Smith died on October 17, 2001 of congestive heart failure.
14. Sara Christian
As mentioned in Slick Smith's segment, Sara Christian was the wife of Frank Christian. Sara's racing backstory is rather unknown, but it's inferred that she cut her teeth in women-only races called "Powder Puff Derbies" before diving into the NASCAR world with her husband.[34]
Nicknamed "The Country's Leading Woman Stock Car Driver",[11] Sara drove a Ford owned by Frank at Charlotte.[35] To quote The Charlotte Observer's qualifying report:[36]
A feminine complexion was added for today's 150-mile strictly stock car classic at the New Charlotte Speedway when Sara Christian, attractive Atlanta woman driver, was granted permission to test her skill against the male speedsters and verified her qualifications by qualifying 13th in the starting field today.
[...]
Mrs. Christian is not a newcomer in stock car racing. In fact, the Atlanta woman has a modified stock car in which he has used to compete with men in other races, and her entry yesterday was not altogether a surprise when Race Director Bill France granted permission for her to try her skill in the long test. This, however, will definitely be her first test in long distance racing, but she was anything but afraid when she zoomed her entry around the trick track yesterday.
Mid-race, she was replaced by pole sitter Bob Flock after the latter's engine failed.[35]
Being the lone female driver in the inaugural race, it goes without saying that Christian is NASCAR's first woman driver, but it wouldn't take long for others to also come aboard. She was joined by Ethel Mobley and Louise Smith for the following race at Daytona Beach.[37]
Christian only ran six more Grand National races in her career, with six in 1949. Regardless, she scored two top tens, including a fifth at Heidelberg, both during the first season. At the end of 1949, she was named Woman of the Year by the United States Drivers Association.[35]
She died on March 7, 1980 at 61. She is buried at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery in Dahlonega, Georgia.
15. John Barker
Barker, of Hickory, North Carolina, is the only driver in this field to not have any sort of biographical information on Racing-Reference.
Anyway, he finished 15th in a 1947 Kaiser owned by Ralph Chaney. Chaney would eventually field cars for Barker in three races in 1951, where his best finish was 12th at Martinsville. Barker had seven Grand National starts that year, including four with Leo Sigman in a Studebaker.[10]
Since no info on his birth and death dates are available, it can only be assumed that he is probably dead until proven otherwise.
16. Jimmie Lewallen
He might not be the greatest Jimmie in NASCAR history, but Jimmie Lewallen certainly had quite a role in it. A former moonshine runner and good friend of Bill Blair,[38] he was part of a 12-driver group who met with Bill France at the Rex Hotel in Atlanta on October 12, 1947 to write up the initial plans for NASCAR.[39] France even offered Lewallen a chance to "buy into NASCAR" for $500, which he rejected as he felt "it would never amount to anything."[40]
Even outside of the racing world, Lewallen was a decorated man; before helping in NASCAR's creation, he was a veteran of the Normandy invasion as he served in General George Patton's Third Army, where he was wounded twice and received the Purple Heart, Silver Star, and Bronze Star.[39]
"Huge Foot", as he was nicknamed,[38] would race in Grand National in the 1950s and much of the Convertible Division in 1956, where he finished eleventh in points. Although he never won a race in either series, he enjoyed success in modified and sportsman series, including winning the 1950 Modified title at Bowman Gray.[40]
Lewallen died on October 16, 1995 at a Winston-Salem hospital after a battle with cancer.[39] He is buried at Springfield Friends Meeting House Cemetery in High Point, North Carolina.
17. Lee Petty
Ah, Lee Petty. Hall of Famer, father of The King, inaugural Daytona 500 winner, leader of Petty Enterprises, the list goes on.
We all know Petty's story, so let's just focus on how he did in the summer of '49. Lee and 12-year-old Richard reached Charlotte Speedway in a 1948 Buick Roadmaster, which was also Lee's car of choice for the race for various reasons like size and an engine that was likely going to work quite nicely in the dirt. Said car was also not actually his, instead belonging to his neighbor Gilmer Goode who was willing to lend it to him assuming the prize money could pay off any damages.
Well, Lee ended up wrecking the car. As Richard explained in Ryan McGee's article on the race:[11]
"People complain about the traffic over there when they are trying to get to the airport," says Richard Petty. "But they should have been with us when we were trying to get to that racetrack in 1949. You might want to check and see, because I'm pretty sure there are probably some folks still stuck down there."
[...]
"This was the first real stock car race, you see," Richard Petty explains. "Daddy wanted to make sure he was going to be a part of that. And he really wanted to make sure he got a part of that $6,000 purse."
[...]
Barely half the field made it to the race's halfway mark. That's when Lee Petty lost control of his borrowed Buick and barrel-rolled it through the third turn.
"My first thought was, 'I hope Daddy is OK,'" Richard remembers. "Then my second thought was, 'Oh, man, how are we gonna get home?'"
[...]
"When we got home that night, all I could think about was the future," Richard Petty says. "I was wondering where all this might go and I was hoping that maybe the Petty family could go along with it, and we did."
The kid who became King winks.
"But first we had to go tell Gilmer Goode that we had wrecked his car."
Petty died on April 5, 2000 at the Moses Cone Hospital, where he had been staying after underoing surgery for a stomach aneurysm. His passing came just three days after great-grandson Adam made his Cup debut at Texas Motor Speedway.[41] He is buried at Level Cross United Methodist Church Cemetery in Randleman, North Carolina.
18. Skimp Hersey
I'll say this in advance: Skimp Hersey has probably the darkest bio of any of the drivers here.
Hailing from Florida, Hersey was a fast but unlucky driver. Although he had his race wins like a NASCAR Modified victory at Jacksonville, he received the nickname "Hard Luck Kid" in 1948 since he regularly found himself in wrecks. Despite his inconsistent finishes, his fortunes took a turn for the better during the 1949 NASCAR season, and he was eventually one of the first to race at Charlotte Speedway.[42] Of course, he would later run the first Strictly Stock event at the track.
Fast forward to June 12, 1950, when Hersey was competing in a 100-mile National Stock Car Racing Association (NSCRA) Modified race at Lakewood Speedway in Atlanta.[43][44]
Lakewood Speedway was not a forgiving race track. Besides various deaths, the previous year's NSCR race saw four different drivers get sent to the hospital for injuries in wrecks. Additionally, if you were going to race at Lakewood, it was imperative that you keep an extra gas can in your car; true to its name, Lakewood had a literal lake as its "infield", meaning any driver who ran out of fuel on the backstretch was basically stuck there for the rest of the race with no way to get back to pit road. As such, drivers kept the fuel can to make brief refuels when they were running low.[43]
Anyway, Hersey's car got loose in turn one and rolled, hitting the fence.[44] The gas can in the car lost its lid during the roll, causing the cockpit to be coated in fuel. After landing in front of the stands, the car went up in flames. Five minutes later, Hersey crawled out of the burning car and sat by the wreck as he called for help).[43] However, fire crews had to wait for the other drivers to stop before they could get to him.[44] In the meantime, a newspaper photographer arrived on the scene... to take photos. Despite Hersey's pleas, the photographer continued his work. Police had to escort him from the track as they expected the fans to attack him for not doing anything.[43]
Once the firemen finally arrived, all of Hersey's clothes but his underwear had been burned off. He was transported to Grady Hospital but died the next day. He was 37.[43]
The race was called off after 81 laps and Jack Smith was declared the winner.[44]
Hersey is buried at Evergreen Cemetery in his hometown of St. Augustine, Florida.
19. Bob Smith
Considering how common of a name Bob Smith is, it probably comes with no shock that it took quite the digging to find anything.
Anyway, he had four career starts in 1949 and 1950, including the first Southern 500 in 1950 (officially the Southern Five Hundred). Incidentally, assuming they aren't the same person, the Radford, Virginia native was actually the second Bob Smith at newly-Darlington Raceway as the track's PR head also had the same name.[45]
In regards to the 1949 Charlotte race, Smith was third-fastest after the first wave of qualifying, tailing Red Byron and Curtis Turner.[24] After ultimately starting seventh, he ended his day in 19th.[36][1]
Per RR, he died on February 26, 1997.
20. Otis Martin
Otis Martin of Roanoke, Virginia qualified sixth at Charlotte in his 1949 Ford, right in front of Bob Smith.[36] He finished 20th due to overheating issues.[1]
Nicknamed "Bib Overalls" since he raced while wearing the attire in question, Martin was considered a bit of a mountain man. He later ran the Martinsville race that year, but finished last, and would contest 23 series races in his career until 1954 with a best run of sixth at Charlotte in 1953. His final NASCAR start came in the 1954 Southern 500.[46] Heck, he was even a survivor of the infamous 1949 Lakewood Speedway race mentioned earlier.[47]
However, Martin died in a car accident on November 21, 1955; ironically, Virginia had just begun a three-week period of promoting safe driving. He was 37. The Associated Press wrote the following:
A 37-year-old Henry County man was killed in an auto crash today a little more than three hours after the start of a three-week safe driving period. The first in the state for that period—and four others over the week-end boosted Virginia's 1955 traffic toll to 770—86 higher than the same time last year.
Otis Mason Martin of Rt. 1, Martinsville, was killed in a single-vehicle crash on State Rt. 57, 1½ miles east of Stanleytown at 3:10 a. m.
Safe Driving Day is Dec. 1. States and communities were asked to keep accident records for 10-day periods before and after that date for comparative purposes.
A comment on his RR bio claiming to be his oldest son added:
Otis was killed in a car wreck on Rte 57 near his hometown of Bassett Va Nov 21,1955.
He was driving a 1955 Ford Fairlane with a 1952 Chrysler Hemi-Head Engine. The accident was caused by the driveshaft separating from The transmission, digging into the pavement and catapulting the vehicle into several flips. Two passengers in the car survived the accident with only minor injuries.
21. Frank Smith
Father of Archie, Frank Smith supposedly did not actually run the race; according to his son, he let Jimmy Thompson drive his car at the last second. Either way, Archie maintains he and his dad were the first fatheson team in NASCAR history.[16]
Frank later ran the Occoneechee Speedway race, where he finished 14th.
After a lot of confusion in RR's comments, it appears he died on March 29, 1957 at the age of 55.
22. Bill Snowden
Like Skimp Hersey, Bill Snowden hailed from St. Augustine, Florida. During the 1949 season, he raced for the NASCAR Modified title, where he was hanging in ninth at the time of the Strictly Stock debut.[4]
Nicknamed "Wild Bill", Snowden was a fan favorite in his home state and outside.[49] Considered the "hottest of the hot stock car pilots in the nation" by The Orlando Sentinel in 1951,[50] he ran 25 Grand National races between 1949 and 1952 with top tens in 14. He was even nominated by the Florida Sports Writers Association as one of the biggest contributors to pro sports in 1950, alongside the likes of Bill France and future Baseball Hall of Fame manager Al López.[51]
Besides driving, Snowden also dabbed in team ownership, fielding rides for the likes of Curtis Turner and Fireball Roberts.[49][52]
After retiring from racing, he became a shrimp boat operator. He died at his home on February 2, 1959.[53]
23. Jim Paschal
Jim Paschal, who retired from the Charlotte race for overheating issues and hung out in the top 15 for the 1949 points standings,[54] was a nominee for the 2020 NASCAR Hall of Fame class. While he wasn't one of the inductees, he enjoyed a solid and long career that saw him race across the Grand National era and into the Winston Cup name.[55]
From 1949 to 1972, he recorded 25 race wins and 230 top tens in 421 races, a nearly 55 percent top-ten rate. A short track master, all but two of his victories came on such courses.[55] Despite his short track success, Paschal noted he "didn't have any track mastered, but I had awfully good luck at Nashville. I won three races in a row there."
The two non-short track victories came in the World 600 in 1964 and 1967; his 1967 win saw him lead 335 of 400 laps, setting a race record that stood until Martin Truex Jr. smashed it in 2016.[55] When he was inducted into the NMPA Hall of Fame in 1977, Paschal recalled:[56]
"It was the kind of race that when you think about it, it brings a smile to your face. The press wrote that it was tires that helped me win that race and they were right. But none of them knew the trouble we went to to get the tires that we ran.
"The tires that we selected to run weren't supposed to be the fast type. But we found out that they were only three to four hundredths of a second off the real fast tires -- and the tires we picked would last. The others would not. We and Goodyear were calling all over the place to try and get a full set. We would get one tire here, another tire there. We had tires coming in from everywhere. We didn't have enough tires to run the race until the morning of the race."
A modest man, Paschal was held in high regard by his peers. Richard Petty considered him a top-ten greatest driver in Cup history:[56]
"Jim was a natural. Driving was just easy for him. He ranks as one of the best of all-time on my list."
Pascal was also quite surprised by Petty's comment. I didn't figure anything like being inducted into the Hall of Fame would happen to me and I didn't figure anything like what Richard said about me would happen. To be considered one of the 10 best of all time was really a surprise."
After retiring, Paschal owned a trucking business alongside Modified driver Max Berrier.[56] He died of cancer on July 5, 2004; he was 77.[57] Paschal is buried at North Bend Cemetery in Jackson Creek, North Carolina.
"I'm not a hero," Paschal once said after his NMPA Hall of Fame induction.[56] "I have not done anything along these lines. I don't understand it. I thought the Hall of Fame was for heroes.
"I didn't really think I would be elected to it. That's why this means so much to me."
24. B.E. Renfro
The #1 driver to drive #1 came in Race #1 with B.E. Renfro (no relation to Randy Renfrow). Only ran two Strictly Stock races with a 17th at Occoneechee.
However, since he went by initials, I had a hard time figuring out his full name and his identity. As such, I eventually gave up and will default to his RR: died on May 27, 2001.
25. Fred Johnson
In May 1949, Fred Johnson of Hamptonville joined Bill France and NASCAR at the newly-opened Charlotte Speedway alongside fellow Johnson and North Wilkesboro native George Johnson.[58] A month later, Fred would be the only Johnson running the inaugural Strictly Stock race at the track. In doing so, Fred connected a piece of NASCAR history to one of the sport's greatest names: Junior Johnson.[59]
After growing up in the bootlegging business, brothers Fred and Junior got into racing.[59] Although Fred would only run seven career Grand National races (scoring two top tens) with Junior obviously being the more iconic brother, the two of them worked together and competed with one another. In 1955, the pair teamed up under B&L Motors with Junior in an Oldsmobile and Fred a Cadillac; such cars were even switched between the two during the season.[60]
Even out of the car, Fred worked with Junior Johnson & Associates as a farm manager. He died on January 7, 1991 and is interred at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Ronda, North Carolina.[61]

2019.12.12 20:10 Gypsyknightsgames Independence Games 12-12-19

Some news from Independence Games:
1> Earth Sector's primary writing phase is over. Currently the artists are finishing their pieces for the project and our editor, Curtis Rickman, is going over the manuscript looking for errors that I have made. We fully expect to have Earth Sector out at our expected release date of January 3. You'll see more previews for the product between now and then.
2> Michael Johnson is currently working on the "2350 Tech Update". As Earth Sector is set in 2350 and the other Clement Sector books are set in 2342, this will let you update your existing game in Clement Sector or a game that you decide to run in Earth Sector with the technological changes that come along during those eight years. Expect to see this in late-January, early-February.
3> Now that I'm finished writing Earth Sector, I'm moving on to writing the Earth Subsector sourcebook. This will be a detailed sourcebook in the same traditional as the Subsector Sourcebooks for Clement Sector. We're hoping for this one to show up sometime in February.
4> In addition to Michael Johnson's work on the 2350 Tech Update, Michael is working on the first of the Tim's Guides concerning Hub Subsector. You should see this at some point in early 2020.
5> The printers have informed me that the print proof of the Knox-class Frigate is on the way to IG HQ. Assuming that the proof is up to our standards, you should see the Knox in print shortly after it arrives. At that point, we'll be back to having all of our PDFs in print format as well.
6> I will also be appearing at Chattacon in Chattanooga, TN on January 24-25, 2020. More details to come. For more information on Chattacon, check out this link: https://www.chattacon.org/
7> I will be appearing at ConNooga in Chattanooga, TN on February 21-22, 2020. There will be more details forthcoming. For more information concerning ConNooga, check out this link. http://www.connooga.com/
8> I will also be appearing at MystiCon in Roanoke, VA on February 28 - March 1, 2020. I will be running a Clement Sector game and an Action Movie Physics game there. For more information concerning MystiCon, click on the following link: https://mysticon-va.com/
9>While we had previously announced that I would be running games at Metrotham Con in Chattanooga, TN on May 1-3, 2020, that is no longer the case. I will be unable to attend due to a scheduling conflict with a family event. However, if you'd still like to go and you'd like to know more about Metrotham Con, just follow this link: https://metrothamcon.com/
Have a good week and thanks for your time!

WHAT IS A PROBATE SALE?

Probate is simply the legal process of the state administering a home sale. A lot of folks think it’s about distributing assets, but really it’s about settling making sure taxes are paid and settling liabilities more than it is about distributing wealth to the family. About 95% of Americans will either go through probate or will be exempt because of a small state exemption. That’s because vast majority of people do not have a living trust.
There are two common ways to avoid probate. One is to have a living trust or to have less than $100,000 total net worth in order to be exempt from the probate process. if you don’t meet one of those two criteria you pretty much will go through probate regardless of whether you have a will or not. A common misconception a lot of people have is that they want to do probate because they had a will. But let’s just test date succession versus not having a will, as intestate succession. Either way, the rules are the same. You still have a probate sale on your estate unless you’ve structured the estate in such a way that you are avoiding it. Keep in mind, however, that the court system is inconsistent, and things may not always go as anticipated.

DIGNITY & EMPATHY IN THE SALES PROCESS

What works first and foremost above all things is having dignity and empathy for the bereaved family & the recently departed homeowner. You need to care about the people going through this process and offer them a real solution, even if it doesn’t appear like one may exist. This is the first, essential step to successfully completing a probate sale. Not very many people have an estate plan because people tend to not want to think of their eventual demise. It doesn’t matter what socioeconomic status. You are where you’re at, geographically. Most people will go through this because they just didn’t plan properly.

COMPLETING THE PROBATE PUZZLE

As Real Estate professionals we’ve got an opportunity to step into a super stressful situation and just make a make a molehill out of the mountain. Think about it, we use contractors. Cleaning services, movers, and we have all these contacts and we’re so good at connecting and bringing people together. We need to help put the puzzle together for people going through probate. If you can do that and figure out how to present it to the community as a single vertically integrated solution. You don’t have to do much more work. You just have to offer more services and then your partners will do their part, you do your part as a real estate professional.

LEVERAGING A VIRTUAL ASSISTANT IN THE PROBATE PROCESS

Virtual Assistant can be very helpful to you in processing probate sales. With a system like All The Leads, they can gather probate leads in your area and categorize them as needed. They can ensure that you contact these leads in a timely manner without it seeming like you are an “ambulance chaser”.
As you help your clients going through the Probate process, a Real Estate Virtual Assistant can set actions in motion such as contacting different services you may want to tap for your clients, they can coordinate and connect you to your contractors etc.

2019.11.05 17:01 youngrichntasteless Starting a $21k/month chimney service company while working a full-time job

Hey - Pat from StarterStory.com here with another interview.
Today's interview is with Mitchell Blackmon (u/thayer94) of Patriot Chimney, a brand that makes chimney & dryer vent services
Some stats:

Hello! Who are you and what business did you start?

Hi everyone, my name is Mitchell and I’m one of the three founders of Patriot Chimney. We sweep, repair, and build chimneys and also service and repair dryer vents around the Roanoke Valley in Virginia.
We created the company in order to provide really, really awesome, transparent, and trustworthy chimney and dryer vent services in our region. You see, chimney companies don’t typically receive a positive reputation and we’re out to change that. In fact, we’ve been fortunate enough to provide our services to more than 350 homes in an area that spans from Lynchburg, VA all the way down to Blacksburg, VA. What’s more is that we’ve also been able to generate more than $212,000 in revenue during our first year, with 8% of that being net profit.
I studied marketing in college, but my experience in the past few years has been a mix between marketing and sales, so my focus is primarily around building the sales and marketing strategy for us. My brother (Matt) and a friend of his (Billy) focus on the operations, actually getting on the roof and doing some real dirty work.
image

What's your backstory and how did you come up with the idea?

When I was in college, I was involved in a lot of extracurricular activities and always working. When I graduated, frankly, I became bored after work. My mom owned a housekeeping company when I was younger and I thought that would be a good idea, so I created a housekeeping company and hired her and my aunt to work it. My brother, Matt, and I would talk about creating different businesses together since he was out of the Marines and we’d go back and forth between things like home health, more housekeeping, or even a landscaping company, but we never really could agree on one.
During this time, Matt started working for one of our competitors in the Roanoke valley and used his GI Bill to get certified through the Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA), which is the main chimney/dryer vent education association in the USA. After a while, Matt helped his friend Billy get a job at the same company. They noticed some shady practices, their paychecks bouncing, and their ideas to help grow the business were cast aside by the owner. They made it through the burn season (the busiest time in the industry) but that following summer they were let go.
A few weeks before they were fired, I had actually just moved to Raleigh from Kentucky and I had plenty of free time before I started working again. This was the perfect time to take Matt & Billy’s experience sweeping and my experience already creating and operating a service-based company and create a chimney company from scratch.

Take us through the process of designing, prototyping, and manufacturing your first product.

Since Matt and Billy worked for the chimney company we knew exactly what we needed to offer as far as the services are concerned and we were familiar with our competitor’s pricing. So the first thing we did was make a list of all of the different services that we would be able to offer and added under each service which tools and equipment we would need in order to do the job safely. Then we made a separate spreadsheet with the equipment and figured out how much each item cost from the distributor and created tiers to categorize the importance of each tool.
Second, beyond the tools, we looked at what we needed as far as licenses, insurance, and certifications are concerned. It turned out that we needed a class B Virginia Contractor’s License, general liability insurance (which is very hard to find as a chimney company), and we needed to transfer our CSIA certifications & National Chimney Sweep Guild (NCSG) membership over from the competitor company to our company.
Then, to ensure that we were working efficiently and consistently, Matt and Billy worked on building a standard operating procedure (SOP) that we actually still use today. Part of that SOP was developed by working on and being the best at simple things that other chimney companies aren’t very good at. For example, we run a camera down the flue during every inspection, take pictures, and, if we find anything alarming, we explain to the homeowners exactly what it is, what caused it, and what needs to happen in order to fix it. We do this because:
Finally, we started to look at different softwares and tools that will help make our lives a lot easier, received pricing, and set revenue & profit goals in order to get the items we want.

Our first Van

Describe the process of launching the business.

When we were getting started, as I mentioned, I was in between jobs, so I had a lot of time. Fortunately, that gave me a lot of time to work on Patriot Chimney’s website. In addition to building the website, I set up the phone system, created the logo, filed the tax paperwork, and ordered uniforms, business cards and door hangers/flyers. All in all, it took about a week or two, working several hours per day.
While I was working on that stuff, Matt & Billy hit the ground canvassing neighborhoods, calling old friends in Roanoke, and trying to have conversations about what we were doing. They were also working on securing memberships with Copperfield and other chimney suppliers so that we would be able to get the partner discounts on material and equipment for jobs.
All three of us were heavily invested in getting the company off the ground and a big part of that was buying the site, phone system, marketing materials, equipment, etc. We pooled our own money that we had, used credit cards, and received about $5,000 from family and friends as a loan. The initial start-up costs, including the van was about $7,500-8,000.
I’ve started a couple of businesses in the past as the sole operator, so it was interesting trying to coordinate different pieces of the puzzle with three people. No one wants to be told what to do as an owner and at the same time, we all respected each other enough to not want to tell anyone what to do either. So managing the project was pretty difficult.
Once we became acquainted with working with one another on something this important, it became clear that we needed to become more organized, assign roles, and get focused on the same goal. My advice to anyone starting out is to set clear expectations, agree on work to be done, and hold everyone accountable. It might be awkward, but trust me - it is worth it in the end.

Since launch, what has worked to attract and retain customers?

In order to earn the customer’s business, we do a mix between digital marketing and in-person marketing (not sure if that’s what you actually call it). At first, I was focusing almost exclusively on digital marketing since I am in Raleigh, doing the typical SEO, PPC, and social media and that kept a steady stream of customers. I think that allowed us to grow a lot, but we felt that we could do more.
At that time, Matt and Billy were answering the calls, scheduling the work, and frankly doing a lot of admin work on top of all of the chimney work. This is primarily because I had another job that wasn’t Patriot Chimney that took 8 hours per day. They were getting really close to complete burnout. So to free up their time, we had to hire an administrative assistant, who was actually our first hire. Now she answers all of the calls, returns calls, manages the schedule, and works on projects that I need help with. We were missing a lot of calls throughout the day, so having Kaylin has really been a blessing, and we’ve been able to grow a lot more since she’s been on board. But, still, we felt we could do more.
So once we had Kaylin answering calls, Matt and Billy doing their thing, we decided it was time to hire a salesperson. A lot of blogs actually advised against this, but with my background in sales, I thought that I could build out a door-to-door sales program, build a sales playbook, create revenue and sales goals, and create a sales engine for our company that would help bring in more business. This definitely turned out to be a much bigger job than I originally anticipated, but we are earning dozens of new clients each month so far, our salesperson is breaking his own records weekly and having conversations about our service with hundreds of customers.
Our salesperson works out of a sales cadence, which is typically more for inside sales, but this way he staying organized and we have methodical follow up for the prospects. For example, the first day he knocks, if they don’t answer he leaves a door hanger without a discount. Two weeks later, he goes back at a different time; if they don’t answer he leaves a door hanger with a discount that has an expiration date of 7 days after. Finally, after another two weeks, he leaves a third door hanger that’s a “sorry we missed you” type thing. All the while, I am exporting his list of neighborhoods and sending mailers to those people he left hangers for. This way we are targeting people who may not have otherwise looked up Patriot Chimney and touching them up to 6 times that we know of (they could look us up or see an ad on Facebook or something like that). This is definitely very inspiring for all of us because he is putting himself out there each day and I know that we are going to get a great ROI out of this sales program.

Thank you card that we leave behind each chimney service
Online, I work pretty hard to always have some decent content published for our neighbors in Roanoke. I work with a content group out of India called Godot Media to have blog posts written twice per month. Admittedly, I pay for the cheapest option and because of that, I have to go back through and update it so that it sounds more conversational in the southeastern Virginia style. I also try pretty hard to make some decent graphics to share. What I do when I share the content requires the prospect to go back to a landing page that I built on the website, where they sign up. Once they've signed up they receive an email with the piece attached. Then, automated through Aweber, I send follow up emails with more content, eventually asking for their business.
This is generally our style through Facebook ads. For Google ads, I send the clients to a landing page that is a bit more direct when asking for the sale, because I think the folks on Google are clearly further along in the sales cycle, especially when they’re searching for things like “chimney sweep in Roanoke.”
To retain customers, we work hard to provide a really good service, to begin with. Matt and Billy always share the diagnosis with the client, show pictures, and try to explain everything in a simple way so that the customer knows exactly what’s going on. Following service, Kaylin always calls them back within 48 hours of their last job to see how everything went and emails them a survey to fill out that we use to evaluate operations. Then, we send them postcards or thank you cards with a handwritten note to simply say “thanks for your business.” We’re only in our second year, but to get the customers back for round 2, we call and remind them that NFPA and all local fire codes recommend having their system checked by a professional each year. I don’t have any exact numbers, but so far this year our win rate on past clients has been extraordinary.

How are you doing today and what does the future look like?

We are profitable and we are growing. In our first year, we earned over $212,000 in gross revenue, but our net profit was only 8%. This is because we had to buy everything to get started and upgrade some of the cheaper equipment. We spend anywhere between $300-500 per month on both digital and in-person marketing. That’s to pay for blogs, ad spend, mailers, and door hangers.
Listen to your clients. One of the best things that we did was figure out what our competitors sucked at; we looked at poor Yelp reviews and made a note of what the customers want that our competitors didn’t deliver on.
Since we’ve gotten started, no one has had to miss a paycheck so that’s something to be very thankful for. We are still operating out of my brother’s house, though we did expand to get a storage unit off-site to house a lot of our equipment and materials. I am still working in Raleigh and still have a separate job and still have not received a steady paycheck. My goal has been to put my payback into the business so that we can grow it before I came on full time. At the time of writing, in October, our goal is to have me in full time by January.
We are always looking for new ways to expand. In fact, we have been looking into moving into Bristol, VA and eventually out to Asheville, NC, where I grew up, within the next 5 years. We are looking at opening an online store to sell hearth accessories to our clients and beyond. We have also already created a non-profit called Combat Boots to Top Hats, which is designed to connect combat veterans to work opportunities in the chimney industry. This is a very special cause for us since 4 out of the 5 (I’m the only one…) employees are veterans, and 3 are combat veterans.

Through starting the business, have you learned anything particularly helpful or advantageous?

As I’ve mentioned, I have started a couple of businesses by myself. Through that, it’s really just working through the list of things you need to get done. It’s not as fun or as stressful as starting a business with your brother and a friend. The most important thing you can do is communicate - who does what, set due dates that you all agree on, hold each other accountable, and create consequences for failures. It’s very awkward at first, but it’s extremely useful. You can use a tool like Trello, which is a nice project management tool that you can use the cards to create jobs, due dates, and assignments.
Timing is very important too. The fact that Matt & Billy got fired at the same time that I was in between jobs was the perfect storm that led to the creation of our business. I never really thought about it until this interview, but if we didn’t have all the free time to dedicate to this company and Matt & Billy didn’t have the fire under their seats to still support their family, we may not have had the pressure to get going. We were all scared, throwing a lot of money out there when we didn’t have jobs was a huge risk, but we believed in ourselves and the mission and worked very hard to get the word out there that Patriot Chimney exists.

What platform/tools do you use for your business?

What have been the most influential books, podcasts, or other resources?

Advice for other entrepreneurs who want to get started or are just starting out?

The first one is that running a business is a marathon, not a sprint; you have to play the long game. Create goals for the next 1, 3, and 5 years and then base your short term goals on those. That’s going to help give your operation purpose; it will help you stay organized.
That being said, don’t be afraid to pivot. It’s okay to shift your plans, so long as it coincides with your end goal (this obviously doesn’t ring true if your long term goals change too). For example, a big part of our short term strategy was to clean restaurant kitchen exhaust hoods. This was very difficult because Matt & Billy were working during the day and had to go out to the kitchen exhaust jobs in the evening after the restaurants closed. Then they had to go to the chimney jobs during the day the next day. It was a nightmare. It’s still a good addition to our services, but we decided to hold off on jobs until we can hire more people to help exclusively with kitchen exhausts.
My last one would be to listen to your clients. One of the best things that we did was figure out what our competitors sucked at; we looked at poor Yelp reviews and made a note of what the customers want that our competitors didn’t deliver on. And since we’ve started, we always ask the clients how we can improve and we really take that to heart to ensure we’re providing the best service possible.

Where can we go to learn more?
